EXP1 sketchup model progress 3

With the model, I've decided to change the landscape of the design to make the workshops stand out and interact in a more interesting context. I am tossing up between having the lower workshop burrowed into a hillside or sticking out over a cliff, but I'm yet to make a decision.

I've added some shape to the lower workshop through the use of a curvy elongated concrete encasing, which has a width which makes the mini workshops stick out from the main curve. However, this design would not work very well in a hillside as the pod workshops wouldn't even be able to be seen.

I've tried some more bold geometry in the main exhibition space using some contrast between the intricate and the bold, trying to open the bold shape up to make the two spaces connect while also creating a sheltered space for discussion and interaction between clients.

I do have a worry that the bold shape in the exhibition area neglects the space behind it, however I did also believe that spaces outside of the main exhibition can act as private conversation areas.

Potential landscape

As far as stair development is concerned, the intricate staircase has not had much development as I believe that it suits the building. However, I have changed the ground that the stair comes down onto. I have done so by making the ground an organic shape to suit the overall appeal of the workshop and stair.

For the bold model, I have changed the function of the stair rather than the stair itself. The stair is now integrated into the building by weaving in and out of the building and connecting mini workshops together. I believe this makes the stair an integral part of the building and more appropriate brings people and motorcycles up to the exhibition area. I also made a small change in that the stair continues outside of the building and loops around to the exhibition platform that the motorcycles are shown upon.

36 Custom textures

Here are 36 custom textures to describe new and groundbreaking materials.

The rows in the following image correspond to these materials going from the top row to the bottom row: Light manipulator, Stanene, Aerogel, Cheap solar cells, thermo electric heat scavenger, bio-inspired plastics.

EXP 1 sketchup model progress 2

Since the last progress post I have focused on the downstairs area which is based upon the word 'bold'.

For the downstairs area, I have turned my initial section sketch into a 'plan' view to use the section in a more versatile way and avoid a purely rectilinear scheme.

Current issues include:
-The 'bold' stairs need an interesting place holder instead of a rectangle box. I'm currently brainstorming ways of breaking the ground surface in an interesting way.

-There are possibly too many levels in the bold section, this might make my intended staircase difficult to distinguish from secondary, unimportant staircases.

- I'm having trouble thinking of a way to work an office space into the downstairs workshop, that is the place where desks and such will be placed. This is difficult because at the moment, the workshop looks like a showroom.

-I would like to make space that the dome structure covers more asymmetric with less bare space. It seems to vast and places less emphasis on the workshops themselves.

EXP1 sketchup model progress 1

The sketchup model is proving to be a creative challenge.

The main issue I have found is the below-datum space for Autofabrica with inspiration coming from the word 'bold'.

Initially I planned the workshop to be directly below the exhibition area. However, this has made the area incredibly symmetric and predictable, like rectangular basement.

Creating the staircases has given me some inspiration for the below-ground area. The staircase provides reliefs which can be uses as mini - design workshops. This would allow the stair to be more than just a path to a singular workshop, but rather a network of paths between many mini workshops.

As for the above ground area, I plan to make the space more diverse and interesting possibly using some lattice structures and some variation to the ground plane as, at the moment, it is completely flat and doesn't communicate with each space.

It would be interesting to merge the intricate and bold in the central area. Possibly some complex lattice shapes combined with some rectilinear concrete forms. Initially I wanted everything to be below a dome however this is fast becoming a lost option as it seems to restrict the area.

week 2 - stair sections and models

These stair models will be implemented into my EXP1 sketchup model which is still being developed. I have included my above ground component as context for my intricate staircase, however, my below ground space is still being developed and hence it wouldn't be appropriate to include it as context.

Bold Staircase (1st photo): This staircase uses thick rectilinear forms to suit the confident, bold aesthetic of Autofabrica. A ramp weaves between the main staircase for motorcycle access. Cantilever concrete treads have been used alongside steel railings. This stair is versatile as the ramp landings can be used as mini-workshop spaces for the below-datum space. Glass supports around the ramps provide relief from a purely concrete composition.

Intricate Staircase (2nd photo): This staircase employs tapered thin treads to give the illusion of a light staircase. They also have a curved organic shape to suit the attached building. Handrails have been included around the outside to avoid suffocating the exhibition space with heavy shapes. Supports have been include under the stairs to add realism to their light aesthetic.

Note that two spiral staircases have been used to make the above-datum workshop an accessible space.

Week 1 - 18 sections

Here are 18 sections based on my words to describe AutoFabrica and Bernabei Freeman. These are dominant, dignify, and bold for AutoFabrica and tension, reiterate, and intricate for Bernabei Freeman.

I am aware that in four of these I have forgotten to add the ground texture, this has now been fixed up.

This section will be used as inspiration for the rest of EXP1.
